Mentalidad Israeli

What are the steps leading hatching a project?

First of all, you have to develop a business plan. In the business plan you have to explain the technology, you have to explain what is the forecast for such a product if you will be successul in developing the technology. What is the market, you have to bring the background of the developers, of the team. And the team should be a mix of people. One should be the manager, one should be the chief developer, anotherone have take care of the financing an so one. So first step is business plan, because otherwise you cannot raise money, after this you have to apply with this business plan to the chief scientists o to another benchor capital and if you get the go one, you can start. It takes from 2 to 5 years to develop a new technology or a new product, and then you have to start design the way that you are going to marking it. You have to raise money during the process. So this are the steps that you have to take.

How can investors profit?

This really depends on the success. Sometimes you will lose money, sometimes you make a lot of money. And I will give you an example, the guys of Checkpoint when they started the company, they went to a lawyer, to register the company, to get the formalities, and the lawyer told them “you know, we will provide you the services, we don’t want money. Give us 2% of your earnings” and when they went public, that 2% was 40 million dollars. The angel that invested 350000 dollars when they started, they went to an angel and they told him “give us money”, he gave them 350000, and when they were public, he earn 350 million dollars and he became today in the leaders of venture capital, because he gave 350 and he started to invest in otherones. So the dream is, you know, big. If you succeed, every day you have another company that is selling 300 million, 400 million, 200 million, and the big guys maybe 4 billion, 3 billion. Really depends on the idea

What is the process of selecting the best idea?

This is difficult, first of all it depends in what area you are going to develop the solution. And you have to understand that the solution is really needed in the market, if it is needed, you go and you start to develop it. Now during the development you have to start and to design o plan the way that you are going to market it and to check the feedback that you are getting from the market. And if the feedback is ok and if you are really finishing the project, then the best way is to finding strategic partners. That means, if I’m in the banking business I should find somebody that is expertise to market the bank industry, if I’m in the ensurance, find the best estrategic marketing in ensurance. There is another way like Checkpoint, they build branches and they put people in charge there. So there are many ways to build the marketing system in order to have a success story after the R&D was succesfully fitched.

What is the warranty for an investigator that his idea was not stolen and an investor that his money is safe?

The idea is protected as I said, by a patent. This is the only one way. But when youre dealing with people, you have to ask them to sign a non disclosure agreement (NDA) so whatever they know from you is protected. They can’t do anything with it o give it to others. The investor is not protected, there is a risk. This is the reason we call the venture capital company risk money, risk business. Because you invest in things that you are not sure that the result will be positive, but this is the only way to lift the industry. However the venture capital companies, are investing in many projects in the same time, and it will get 20% or 25% out of the amount of companies that are investing, it can be a hudge success story. Because you may invest in ten, ten million dollars; but one can bring you 3 billion dollars. So forget about the nine, i don’t care about the other nine. And this is the reason why this culture of venture capital is today all around the world, because you’re splitting the risk in many different projects.

What is considered the most important factor for the system, entrepreneurship or innovation?

Both of them, the most important thing is to see the team, understand the characteristic of the team. To understand the background of the people, to understand if they are really dreamers and they are dedicated to it or not. And of course, you need also an idea that is really needed in the market, that is really something different. So what I like always to explain in a very pictural way. Today the world in many ways is a jungle, and the jungle is green. If in Guatemala you have a lot of green and a lot of forest if I ask you from the distance “name me the name of the tree” and you say “mmm everithing is green I don’t know”, but if you bring a blue tree to the green jungle everybody will recognize it and see it because it’s different. So I say that we have to bring blue trees to the green jungle. If you bring blue trees to the green jungle, you will be successfull.

Does the government helps creating laws?

Yes. You know Israel is a very poor country when we are speaking about natural resources. We don’t have anything. You know that God promise Moses that Abraham that they are going to live in the country of milk and honey. So milk we have and honey, but no oil, no copper, nothing. We have only one thing, the human resources, the brain works between the two ears, and we have to use it in the best way. So it is natural resource you can do what Israel became, that we are leaders in the world. So the government recognized it and they make a lot of laws, regulations to promote it. And always you criticize the government but when we are comming to see what they are done in order to promote this industry we have to render to our government.

Why the incubators in Israel are so successful?

The reason of Israel as a whole, became one of the most succesful countries in developing new technologies is due to the excellent education that people are getting in the universities, in the technion, in the Weitzman intitute for reaserch and of course I have to mention that I do believe that we have one of the best schools in the world and this is our army; because when youngsters are joinning to the army they’re encountered with the technology, they’re encountered with new systems that they have to operate but they’re part also of the development of new systems. So when they’re going out of the army, after they develop military systems, military technologies they are converting it in a civilian technology. So if you take, for example a checkpoint. Checkpoint is a company that is known around the world and people don’t believe that it came from Israel; because this is the leading company in the world in data protection. The 3 guys who invented this company were in the army, in the same unit, in intelligence; and they were developing encription systems for the army, they have the background of mathematics an physics and after five years when they left the army they were thinking “what we can do with this knowledge that we accumulated?” and they develop the first encription system in the world and they are the leaders in the world and they are so succesful that in the good days in the year 2000 the value of the company was 30 billion dollars. 3 youngsters at the age of 28. Each of them today have more than a half a billion in the pocket, in the bank and still the value of the company for each one is more than a billion. The profit that they accumulate in the company profit is nearly 2 billion dollars, that profit. So the story of successful companies came from the excellent education. And people in this country and why you are a new citizen you’ll learn it, is a unique culture. The stress that you’re living here, the responsability of each one for whatever is doing is so high that you need a lot of creativity and imagination and if you are directing it to the right direction. Because you have a good idea you will be successful.

Aproximately how many people work in one incubator?

In the same time, it is limited to two years. You can’t stand more than two years in an incubator, you have a wold say about 500 to 2000 people.

Which profile needs a person who works in the incubator?

General speaking, it must have academic background. And some experience in the industry. And the background should be in mathematics, physics, computer science, electronics, etc.

How to handle intellectual property of the projects?

First of all we have today special law officers that are expertise to register patent. So every tecnology is protected by patent. One or maybe sometimes ten. And this is the best way to protect your IP, we call it IP.

Who finance the projects in the incubator?

In the incubator, the money is comming from the chief scientists or the ministry of industry and trade. Other part comes from the owners of the project. So if you get 300000 from the government, 60000 (20%) is coming from the guys who are initializing the project. But they can get it from the parents, from the bank or from an angel, but they have to bring 20%. Today the incubators are after privatization so benchor capital of different investment companies both are in incubators. And today most important investors but usually it is matching money that comes from the chief scientists

Who brings more projects for the incubators, schools, universities or reaserch institutes?

The incubators are occupied by people with technological dreams, they’re coming from every area. They can came from the university, from the hospital, they have a medical idea, they can come from a bank if the people are thinking how to do something that will bring a new generation to a bank.

What is a business incubator?

Business incubator is a place that can provide all the services that are needed for people that has a technological idea and they need somebody to assist them bringing this dream into reality. They have an idea, the need some money, they need some guides, they need a place, they need computers, here’s the place. The incubator provides these kind of services to tell up 15 different kind of startups. Usually they are trying to take in the same area, for example, people who have ideas in communications let them do over one roof, if they have biotech ideas it is better that the all the rest would be in the same area, because they can share ideas, and the manager will be an expert in this area and can assist them. Because in every incubator there’s a manager with experience in R&D, in Reaserch & Development, and has some experience in managing people. So this is in an inicial an incubator.

How many business incubators are here in Israel?

We have today 24 incubators, and usually they are hosting between 200 to 250 different kind of projects. Startups.

In what year was born the idea of business incubators in Israel?

First of all, the idea of how to promote the technology development was in the year 1992; when the government came with an idea of stablishing a special company in the name יוסמה(Yosma and means initiative) and put one million dolars in a pocket saying to the public whoever can provide and convince us that they can manage a project, a technological project, R&D, they will be able to get to applied about 8 million dolars from the government (is a law) if they will raise another 12 million from people or companies in Israel or outside of Israel. So the fund was limited to 20 million dolars. But this created a culture of benchor capital, that today we have more than 20 companies that are investing in tecnology, and money is comming from all over the world, because people would like to get some part of the sucess in these small country, the state of Israel. Because Israel is counted to be between the most important centers for Reaserch and Development in the world. In the year 2000 Israel became the second country in the world with so many startups, we had 5,000 startups, after the United States. Before Yosma we have the function of the chief scientists in the ministry of Industry and Trade, and he provided money for R&D, for tecnology. So every company can apply and ask for some assistance from the government if they had a good tecnological idea. So there is a commitee that is checking for your idea, you have to apply in a certain way; if they’re convinced you will get 50% of the money that is needed for the R&D, but in this chief scientists office they’re develop more ideas how to promote and to attract the israelis to think creativetely. To come with imagination that the sky is the limit, and they provide more ideas. One of them was incubators. If you are not in the state, you can applied to the chief scientist in a regular way because the chief scientist is more (i will say) healthfull in checking the ideas. And when you’re applying for the chief scientist you’re applying for more money, they build another structure of incubators that you can apply and get only a limited amount of money. Only 3000 dollars. And on the top of it you have to raise your own money 60,000; and you get all of these facilities that I told you before. So the icubators were created around the year 1994 or 1995 and since there it is florishing. Israel became a model of this system of incubators.

What has been the most representative cases of succesful incubators in Israel?

In every area that you can imagine, because we had success in communications, we have success in encription, data protection, data system protection, in biotech. So most of the areas that you have experts and people that area thinking how to lift the existing systems to another level of technology.

How many companies has been successful in business incubators in Israel?

I think that the rate is nearly to 50%. Not everybody that is going into the incubator will be succesful, because if is R&D there is a risk that nothing will come out. Because the idea is not a good idea, because sometimes people is not mature with the idea, because the market is not prepared for the idea, o people don’t finish the system o technology. So it depends, but nearly 50%, which is a very high rate kept out of the incubator with the idea of starting to raise more money from angels or from benchor capital companies.
